Frank Caputo, the newly elected Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Member of Parliament, has been sanctioned by the Russian Government.
“Proud to say I have been officially sanctioned by Putin,” Caputo wrote on twitter. “A true badge of honour for all who stand in defence of freedom and democracy.”
The move by the Russian government to ban more than 300 Canadians – including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – from entering the country was in response to the Canadian government imposing new sanctions on 15 Russian officials including the Russian deputy prime minister.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Chief of Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre, and almost every Canadian Member of Parliament – including other Kamloops area MP’s Dan Albas, Brad Vis, and Mel Arnold – have also now been denied entry to the Russian Federation.
“Canada will not relent in its support of Ukraine and its people. President Putin made the choice to (further) his illegal and unjustifiable invasion, and he can also make the choice to end it by immediately ending the senseless violence and withdrawing his forces,” Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said Tuesday morning.
Joly says the latest round of sanctions announced by Canada have targeted people who “have all enabled and supported President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.”
There are now more than 780 individuals in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus on Canada’s sanction list and 203 entities including banks. Canadians have been barred from doing business with any person or organization on the list.
In an emotional address to Parliament this morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Canadians to imagine the terror and horror unfolding in his country and do more to help save Ukraine.
“What I am trying to say is, you all need to do more to stop Russia, to protect Ukraine and by doing that, to protect Europe from Russian threat,” he said. “They’re destroying everything; memorial complexes, schools, hospitals, housing complexes. They’ve already killed 97 Ukrainian children.”
Zelenskyy said the sanctions from Canada and its allies are welcome but not enough to end the war adding Ukraine needs help to close its skies to Russian aircraft and missiles.
