The Kamloops region is set to play host to another batch of Ukrainians this weekend, with even more on the way in May.
Since the start of the conflict, Kamloops Immigrant Services has been able to place 20 Ukrainians in homes in the region, most of whom with families in the community.
Executive Director France Lamontagne says another 11 are moving into Kamloops this weekend, and says they expect at least two-dozen or more Ukrainians coming to the area in May.
“It’s moving fast. It’s very fluid. Governments are improving the programs and the different benefits available to them in the short term,” said Lamontagne.
She also says those arriving already have the skill-sets available to enter the workforce quickly once they’re settled.
“There are a lot of jobs available in Kamloops,” she notes. “A lot of the Ukrainians who arrive have an English-level that would be sufficient to occupy those vacancies.”
Ukrainians arriving in Kamloops can also expect to be helped out financially once they arrive.
Lamontagne says she’s aware of a program being finalized by Ottawa to provide 500$ a week in assistance for those making the transition to Canada, saying she expects the details of that program should be finalized shortly.
“In the meantime, we’re fundraising,” said Lamontagne. “We’re also putting an available 500 dollars per family (out there) until there’s government assistance.”
Those hoping to provide assistance to the Ukrainian resettlement can do so here.
