The Columbia Shuswap Regional District says that while a wildfire near St. Ives, east of Anglemont, burned throughout the night, it did not grow very much.
It says the fire does not pose any risk to any structures at this time.
“The fire displayed Rank 1 and 2 behaviour, which [are] the lowest rankings for a smouldering ground and surface fire,” the CSRD said, in a statement. “There were some occasional flare ups that were visible from Squilax-Anglemont Road.”
Nena Jocic-Andrejevic of the St. Ives Ratepayers Association tells NL News the fire is burning in an area known as Horseshoe Bay.
“It has spread over into the hills. The fire is going up hill. There is smoke,” she said. “Last night, we could see the ridge of glow from any place in St. Ives. This morning there is only smoke. Firefighters are on the scene. Forestry is on the scene. Everything is under control.”
“We’re lucky because we don’t have any wind. The sky is blue but there is smoke coming out, so we expect some activity later on in the day as it warms up. Firefighters are out making sure that the hydrants are working so that if anything goes sideways, we are prepared.”
Jocic-Andrejevic is also hoping that people in the Kamloops area who own property in St. Ives reach out to her at 250-319-0224 if they have any concerns about the situation today.
“There are lot of owners in Kamloops who’s email and phone numbers we don’t have to keep connection with them. So I would like that if anybody has any concerns to give me a call,” she said.
The BC Wildfire Service is investigating the cause of the wildfire.
