Mountain Bikers looking to ride the lift and hit the trails at Sun Peaks are going to have to wait a little bit longer, but you can take your snowshoes up for some sightseeing in the meantime.
The village is continuing to deal with higher than expected snow volumes for the middle of June and it has caused delays to almost all of its tourist activities.
Chief Marketing Officer Aidan Kelly says there are people who have lived in the village for 30 years who have never seen the snow pack still exists that is on the mountain at this time.
“We’re obviously all good in the village. The snow is all gone. The golf course is now open. The full 18 holes are going and it is in great shape. So there’s some good things down in the valley, but once you start creeping up the mountain… we still got three to four feet of snow in many parts.”
Kelly says the hope was to get bikers up the mountain starting on June 17th, but it will be delaying that an additional 10 days and then open with a limited trail selection.
“We are going to start running the lift still on the 17th for sight seeing, but our hiking trails won’t be ready. They’re a ways away still because they’re covered in snow, so we figured we might as well have a bit of fun with it. We’re just cobbling together a plan right now with our partners and resort for snow shoe rentals. So a little bit of summer snow shoeing.”
When it comes to the mountain bike trails, Kelly says the plan is to open things up on Monday, June 27 but it will still remain limited.
“The biking we’re super disappointed on because we’ve got a lot of momentum this year. We’ve got a big expansions that we’re trying to get the construction finished on and moving onto the Sun Dance lift with the bike trail as well. That’s all been delayed by at least a few weeks at this point.”
“From a bike perspective we’re usually pretty strong right out the gate because there is a lot of pent up demand. People have been riding their bikes in the valley and on the cross country trails and all the amazing networks around the Kamloops area or wherever the people are from. And then they usually want to get into some park stuff. We usually come out the gate pretty strong and have pretty consistent traffic and business from opening in the mountain bike space.”
