The City of Kamloops is looking for about 200 people to work the upcoming municipal elections.
Deputy Chief Election Officer Courtney Ranger says prospective candidates have to submit their applications by this Thursday, June 30.
“We are looking for someone who is organized and of course reliable. It is quite a long day. It is a 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. day. So we are looking for people who are confident working in that kind of environment helping people through their voting process,” Ranger told NL News.
“We’re looking for people who are able to sit or stand for quite a long time, and sometimes there can be a bit of volume with the lines of people, so somebody who can stay cool in that situation.”
Ranger says while the City has a “base of devoted people who tend to work most elections” noting many have also worked provincial or federal elections in the past.
“As of right now, we only have about half the applications that we would like to see, and that is just to make sure that we can have enough bodies across all the polling areas across Kamloops,” she said.
While Election Day in B.C. is October 15, Ranger says the goal is to have these people in place by the end of July so they can be trained.
“You have to be 18 years old and entitled to work in B.C., but we definitely have had some interest from students as well.” Ranger said.
“The election official rate is $275 for each day that you worked. So if you worked an advanced poll as well, that would be a separate day rate. For presiding election officials or their assistants, they do make a little bit more just because of the supervisory aspect.”
The goal is to have these election officials in place by the end of July so they can be trained ahead of Election Day which is October 15.
