Kamloops RCMP say they helped a distraught man get medical attention after an incident on the Savona River Bridge yesterday evening.
Police say they were told about a man experiencing a mental health crisis around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5.
“Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP attended the area and closed the highway in both directions while they attempted to negotiate with the man,” RCMP Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said.
She says the RCMP’s Crisis Negotiation Team and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team were also called to the area as was the BC Conservation Officer Service’s jet boat.
“Police on scene were able to convince the man to surrender before the additional units arrived,” Evelyn said.
Drive BC says Highway 1 was closed around 8 p.m., and it reopened about 40 minutes later.
No charges are being recommended as RCMP say the man was safely apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to the hospital for medical assessment and care.
