The BC Wildfire Service will be conducting burn trials in the Lac Du Bois Grasslands Protected Area this week.
These burns may occur between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, and Thursday, July 14, and it is being done in conjunction with BC Parks.
“Smoke from the burns may be visible from Kamloops and surrounding areas during this time and for a short period after,” a statement from the Wildfire Service said. “These burn trials will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation.”
“Conducting these trials allows the BC Wildfire Service to monitor fire behaviour in a constructed setting under appropriate conditions.”
The Wildfire Service says its personnel prepare for these burn trials by setting up water delivery systems in advance and then positioning resources and personnel throughout the trial area, as needed.
“To begin the trial, a small fire will be ignited and monitored by BCWS staff,” the statement added.
“While burning, measurements will be taken on flame height, rate of spread, wind speed and direction and humidity conditions. Measurements are then input into a modelling program to identify how a real wildfire may act in similar conditions. This data allows BCWS to prepare.”
If you think you are seeking smoke from a wildfire that is not related to this exercise, you’re asked to report it to 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell phone.
