Citing a number of factors, Habitat for Humanity has offered up an explanation as to why it’s moving part of its operations off the Kamloops North Shore.
Habitat says a slowdown in donations, combined with the danger its staff continue to face, has prompted its decision to move its ReStore operations from 800 Fortune Drive into its location in Salmon Arm.
In a release, Habitat states there has been ongoing issues surrounding crime and staff harassment.
“Since moving to the new location there have been multiple break & entry’s, windows broken, defacing of the building and damage to the roofing & skylights,” the statement said.
“There have been issues of people sleeping on the doorways and camping on the property, staff have been physically accosted and verbally abused,” suggests Habitat.

“Most recently, staff were forced to deal with a person wielding an axe in the Society office and ReStore. The safety of our employees, volunteers, and customers is of paramount importance and a priority.”
As such, Habitat says they’re moving their ReStore goods and operations to their Salmon Arm location for the time being.
However, it says it will maintain its administrative and operational offices at 800 Fortune Drive until a new location can be found, noting the location had only been a temporary site for them, as it is scheduled for redevelopment.
“We were very excited to move to the 800 Fortune Drive location and it’s unfortunate the decision had to be made,” said William Miller, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Kamloops,
Habitat’s ReStore has been a popular place for people in Kamloops to find cheap deals on used furniture and other household goods.
