Police are now using an underwater recovery team to try to find a man who is believed to have drowned in the Thompson River on Saturday.
“On July 30, 2022, at approximately 5:30pm, Kamloops RCMP received a report of a missing male on the Thompson River near McArthur Island Park,” said Staff Sergeant Kelly Butler in a release.
RCMP say witnesses saw a man go into the river, then get swept away by the current.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the man was attempting to rescue a young child who had ventured into the river.
I called 911. The man saved his 4 yo child and then went under water. Two heroes swam after him but couldn't find him. He was a hero. He saved his child's life

However, the RCMP has not provided any information connected to those reports.
“Civilians attempted to assist but were unable to reach him, and several boats in the area also responded but were also unable to locate the male,” said Butler.
The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is now involved, searching for the victim’s body.
“Kamloops RCMP would like to remind the public that the currents in the river are unpredictable and the riverbed contains many sudden drop-offs,” noted Butler. “Caution should be exercised and PFD’s worn when around moving water.”
