The BC Wildfire Service says the Watching Creek wildfire near Kamloops is being held at 270 hectares in size.
In an update Tuesday morning, it says the lightning-caused fire is “not likely” to spread beyond determined containment lines due to the suppression efforts of firefighters.
“Crews will continue to work within the fire perimeter to fully extinguish areas of heat and flame where needed,” the Wildfire Service said. “Due to this change in status, this incident will no longer be considered a Wildfire of Note in the coming days.”
The lightning-caused fire was discovered on July 29. It saw significant growth on Aug. 1, but has not grown in size since then.
The Wildfire Service also noted this fire got about 10 mm of rain last Thursday, Aug. 4 with the fire burning Rank 1-2 since then, essentially a smouldering ground fire.
For now, the TNRD still has evacuation alerts in place for properties in the vicinity of the fire. The Watching Creek Campground is also closed to the public to support suppression efforts of crews.
As of the latest update, the Wildfire Service says it had 78 firefighters and four helicopters working the Watching Creek fire, aided by two pieces of heavy equipment.
