RCMP say a kidnapping suspect was shot and killed by police following a reported abduction near Kamloops on Sunday evening.
At roughly 5:20 p.m. Sunday, 911 operators first received a call of a woman asking for help from, what sounded like, inside a vehicle.
Mounties say a second call then came in a short time later, reporting an erratic driver on the Trans Canada Highway, with the caller saying a woman seemed to be trying to escape the vehicle.
Authorities then say a third call came in at 5:45 p.m., reporting a family member and child had been abducted. After getting to that scene, police found an empty vehicle with an unspecified weapon inside.
Later that evening, around 9 p.m., officers attended a rural property, reportedly near Savona, after receiving a report of the original suspect vehicle near a trailer.
After arriving, the Mounties established a roadblock, the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team taking over.
Around six hours later, at 3 a.m., police say the man finally left the trailer with a child, while holding a weapon.
RCMP say after some type of “engagement,” the man was shot and killed.
The child wasn’t hurt, and the Mounties later found a woman inside the trailer with non-life threatening injuries.
While the standoff in the rural area was just getting underway, a separate group of Kamloops RCMP officers rolled up to the suspect’s home, after hearing a report that a second woman reportedly being connected to the incident. She was found tied up and injured inside that home. The extent of her injuries isn’t known, with the RCMP only saying that both women were transported to hospital for treatment.
Kamloops RCMP and the RCMP Southeast District General Investigation Section are investigating the initial complaint and the second reported assault.
However, because the police were involved in shooting the suspected kidnapper, the Independent Investigations Office of BC — the province’s civilian police watchdog — is now involved.
