A Former Kamloops Blazer has taken home the bronze medal in the 1500M wheelchair event at the Niagra 2022 Canada Summer Games.
Kyrell Sopotyk, who is now 20-years-old, saw his hockey career come to an end after a snowboarding accident in Jan. 2021 which left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Since recovering from his accident, Sopotyk has remained active in sports.
He’s also competed in wheelchair basketball on a national stage.
Earlier this year, he was honored by the Blazers in a pre-game ceremony.
Sopotyk was a fifth round pick of the Blazers in the 2016 WHL Draft.
In 107 games with Kamloops between 2018 and 2020, the Aberdeen, Sask. native put up 45 points.
