The MP for Kamloops-Thompson- Cariboo is hoping to table a couple more private members bills now that he is back in Ottawa.
With the House of Commons in full swing following the recent summer break, Frank Caputo wants to table the first of two bills on his roster in the next couple of weeks.
While unable to get into the specifics with the public yet, Caputo says its regarding “sentencing for sexual offences.”
“Being someone who previously prosecuted sexual offenses; particularly sexual offenses against children, that is an area I really see a need for reform in.”
On top of that, Caputo says the other bill he is set to propose is regarding the efficiency and workload with the RCMP.
“It’s one provision of the criminal code that really is outdated and wastes a lot of resources.”
While MPs are usually only able to table one private members bill per parliament, Caputo was able to table two in his first year as MP.
The first, sought to change the phrase “Child Pornography” to “Child Sex Abuse Material” in the Criminal Code of Canada, while the other, looked to automatically hold repeat offenders in custody in certain circumstances.
“You can anticipate that I will be tabling another couple private members bills, maybe more from me because that’s the way that as an MP, that I speak to Canadians and to Constituents about my values.”
