The BC Liberal party could have a new name by the end of 2022.
Following an extensive, province-wide consultation with its membership, it announced that it has chosen BC United as the name that party members will vote on. “BC United is a fresh alternative that expresses the Party’s longstanding commitment to unity across a broad coalition of party members, as well as highlighting British Columbia front and centre in the name choice.”
A name change was a key commitment made by BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon and the process got started at the party’s June convention, where two-thirds of delegates voted in favour of considering a new name. It was noted that BC United was chosen out of more than 2,000 suggestions.
“I want to thank all the members who have taken part in the process so far, and I urge them to participate in the vote when the time comes later this year,” said Falcon.
Kamloops-Thompson South MLA and opposition house leader Todd Stone was a guest on the NL Morning News. “This has been a debate within the BC Liberal party going back 20 years. We’ve actually voted on changing the name of the party three or four times previous and the most recent vote that members made on this matter was just this last June at our convention in Penticton.”
“I’ve always known it as the BC Liberal party, but throughout that time there has always been a brand confusion. There has always been concerns about are we affiliated with this federal party or that federal party. Is everyone welcome in the party. What does that name really mean.”
“Of course, this is just one aspect of a comprehensive renewal process already well underway under Kevin Falcon’s leadership,” noted John Yap, BC Liberal President. “Whether it’s recruiting dynamic new candidates, developing innovative, outcome-focused policies, or genuinely connecting with British Columbians about the issues that matter to them, true renewal is something all of us are excited about.”
Falcon says he is planning to vote in favour of changing the name to BC United and he is encouraging party members to do the same.
