UPDATE – The BC Coroners Service has now confirmed that two people were killed after a crash on the Trans Canada Highway near Tappen last night.
The crash between an SUV and a semi happened at Highway 1 and Kirkpatrick Road, just before 7:30 p.m., Oct. 2.
“I can confirm that the BC Coroners Service was notified and is investigating two deaths from an incident matching the date and location you’ve provided,” Coroners spokesperson, Ryan Panton, said in an email to NL News.
“As we’re early in the process of trying to determine all of the facts I have no additional information available at this time.”
BCEHS tells NL News four ambulances were dispatched to the scene, noting two children were transported to hospital in serious condition.
Meanwhile, RCMP in Salmon Arm say the SUV with four people inside was heading east in the westbound lanes when it crashed head on with a westbound semi.
“Two adults from the east bound SUV were pronounced deceased at the scene,” the RCMP said, in a statement. “The two passengers in the SUV, both children, were taken to hospital and at last report are in stable condition.”
“The driver and co-driver of the west bound semi truck suffered only minor injuries and were not transported to hospital and co operated with the investigation.”
Mounties say driver error is likely a factor in this crash.
“[Our] investigation is continuing but at this time it appears that this is a tragic case of driver error on the part of driver of the SUV,” the RCMP statement said.
The crash caused the highway northwest of Salmon Arm to be closed in both directions for just under seven hours.
Drive BC reports it opened around 2 a.m. Monday morning.
