If you haven’t voted in advanced polls already, Election Day tomorrow is your last chance to do so.
City of Kamloops Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Natalie Garbay, says you have to bring two pieces of ID to prove both residency and identity when you go to vote in person, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
“Photo ID is not required but you do need to provide something that has a signature,” she said, noting a combined B.C. Driver’s Licence and Services Card counts as only one piece of ID.
“Kamloops does same day voter registration. So you bring your ID and then it gets manually written down into a voting book and then you declare that all the statements are true about being a Canadian Citizen, that you’re 18 years of age or older, the questions about residence, and that you are not disqualified from voting.”
“That is what takes the time,” Garbay added.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Garbay also said you can go to any one of the 16 polling stations across the City of Kamloops.
“You don’t have to do the one in your neighbourhood where you live. It can be where you work or if you are passing by,” she said.
“Heritage House is open to absolutely everybody and then we’ve used primarily elementary schools but also NorKam and Valleyview. And for the first time, which is really exciting, Juniper Elementary is a polling location too.”
The buses will be free on Election Day, operating between 6 a.m. until just after midnight.
“You don’t even have to be voting; this is just an opportunity for free transit,” spokesperson Jamie Weiss said. “No matter what you are doing on Saturday…free transit is provided for everybody in the Kamloops transit system.”
Just over 5,000 people voted over three days of advance polls this year, up from the roughly 3,000 ballots cast in 2018.
“What can either happen is the voting is either pre-loaded now, and our polling locations will be quieter or we can anticipate an overall increase in voter turnout. We really have no way of knowing,” Garbay said.
If you have a mail ballot that you haven’t yet returned, Garbay says to make sure it is brought to City Hall by 8 p.m. tomorrow otherwise your vote will not be counted.
There are five people running to replace Ken Christian as mayor, with 23 people eyeing one of eight council seats. You’ll find a list of candidates here.
And remember to keep it locked to Radio NL for the latest election results as it comes in once the polls have closed. Former Mayor, City Councillor, and MLA Terry Lake will be our guest pundit.
