B.C.’s police watchdog has concluded that Kamloops RCMP officers were not responsible for serious injuries suffered by a man after a mental health check last week.
Police were called to a home off Pacific Way in Aberdeen around 4 p.m. last Monday, Oct. 24, to reports of an armed man making violent threats.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) say negotiators used “less-lethal force options” to subdue the man around 8:35 p.m. that evening, after negotiating with him for several hours.
In a statement Monday, they say the man was taken to hospital after he sustained a serious, self-inflicted injury shortly before he was taken into custody.
“Medical information and a civilian witness confirm that the only injury the man sustained that meets the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act was self-inflicted,” the IIO said, noting it will not pursue the matter further.
“Accordingly, following a review of the evidence, the Chief Civilian Director has determined that the officers are not responsible for the man’s injury.”
