As winter driving conditions have officially hit the Kamloops region and beyond, the BCAA is reminding drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.
BCAA Automotive Manager Josh Smyth says it’s crucial to give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
“We don’t want to overestimate our abilities and underestimate the weather, a combination of the two can certainly put people in a less than advantageous position,” he said.
With that, Smyth also encourages drivers heading out on the highways to plan an alternate route as weather patterns can be unpredictable.
“What if something occurs on the path that you planned on? We want to make sure we can make an adjustment, and still get where you need to be,” he said.
“Check your google maps, listen to the weather reports, and prepare for the trips.”
Smyth also reminds drivers to keep an eye on tire pressure, as it often changes with fluctuating temperatures.
“Tire Pressure is important because it certainly keeps you on the road, and that’s where we want the drivers to stay.”
“And check your tire depths, make sure that your tires are good for snowy conditions, and make sure you’ve got proper winter tires as well.”
He encourages drivers to restock their emergency kit with snacks, water, flashlights, coolant, clothes, high-visible clothing, a flashlight, and traction aides.
“If you do find yourself in a slick situation, you want traction, some de-ice melting salts, or some kitty litter for traction, some sand, these kinds of things are always a great idea to keep in the kit.”
While refilling a road emergency kit, Smythe explains it’s also important to check your car battery and the batteries in your flashlight.
“You might need light, so double-check your batteries, and don’t use the same batteries as last year. There’s a good chance that they’re going to be depleted and fail you when you need them.”
The BCAA reminds car owners to check your windshield wipers as they often wear out faster in cold weather.
