BC Liberal members have voted 80 per cent in favour of changing the party name to BC United, the party announced Wednesday morning.
The name change comes after an online vote from Sunday to Tuesday, with party members voting on the name they say was chosen out of more than 2,000 suggestions.
“For more than twenty years, our party’s name has been a constant topic of debate,” Leader Kevin Falcon said, in a statement. “A strong vote for BC United marks a new beginning.”
“I’m excited to move forward as BC United because it really reflects our big tent party, united for a common purpose of making life better for British Columbians.”
The next steps will include a constitutional ratification of the new name during a party convention – likely to happen early in the New Year. Once ratified, the party will release details on its implementation, logos, and branding.
“In keeping with the commitments we’ve made, all of our members had the opportunity to vote as to whether they wanted to change the party name to BC United, or to remain as the BC Liberals,” BC Liberal Party President, John Yap, said.
“After extensive consultation, and with 80 per cent approval from our membership, I’m pleased to see support for the new name surpassed all expectations and is the clear choice of our members.”
The party says “BC United” has been registered with Elections BC, though it will retain registration of the BC Liberal name to prevent other parties from using it.
For now, the party will remain the BC Liberals for quite some time, with Falcon suggesting they may not change names completely until near the next election, scheduled for 2024.
