Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla because of hazardous winter conditions on area highways tonight (Nov. 29) into tomorrow (Nov. 30).
It says there could be between 20 and 35 cm of snow accumulating which could create hazardous driving conditions.
The warning also covers the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna, where blowing snow is expected to also cause reduced visibility on the road.
“A low pressure system will move onto Vancouver Island today,” a statement from Environment Canada said. “Light snow will begin this afternoon and intensify tonight before ending early Wednesday afternoon. Wind gusts up to 60 km/h on the Okanagan Connector will give reduced visibility in blowing snow.”
“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.”
The weather agency is also calling for snow, sub-zero temperatures, and strong wind for much of south coastal British Columbia.
There could be as much as 15 cm of snow in parts of southwestern B.C., and in some cases, the snow could turn to rain, possibly freezing rain in parts of the Fraser Valley.
