Thompson Rivers University will release the findings of an independent investigation into allegations of discrimination and harassment against a current and former senior administrator at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
The long delayed investigation began in Nov. 2021 after anonymous complainants against Vice-President of Finance and Administration, Matt Milovick, and Associate Vice-President of People and Culture, Larry Phillips, came to light in Feb. 2021.
“Though the process is being conducted independently by the investigators, the sub-committee [of the board of governors created to work with the complainants] understands that the investigators have conducted comprehensive, and in some cases, repeated interviews with the complainants, the respondents and numerous individuals who have information to contribute,” TRU spokesperson, Michelle Nordstrom, said, in a Sept. 2022 statement.
“While the process is taking some months to move towards completion, the Board believes that the investigators are moving forward as expeditiously as possible while adhering to their mandate to conduct a careful and thorough investigation.”
On Jan. 4, 2023, Nordstrom said the investigation report was delivered to the sub-committee on Dec. 21, 2022.
“The report was provided to external counsel immediately to begin the review, however, the holiday season and statutory breaks have caused some delay to this work,” Nordstrom said, in a statement, noting it will determine what portions have to be redacted under B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
“Once those review processes are complete and all parties have been properly informed of findings, it is likely that TRU will be able to share some portions of the report.”
Both the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the TRU Faculty Association have passed non-confidence motions against TRU President, Brett Fairbairn, and Board Chair, Marilyn McLean, over their handling of the situation.
The two organizations were also calling on TRU to put the two men on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation. While Phillips has since left the university, Milovick has continued on in his role.
“The Board recognizes this has been a lengthy and complex process, and difficult for many individuals whether they are directly or indirectly involved. We thank everyone for their patience and the care shown for one another through these many months,” Nordstrom said, in the Sept. 2022 statement.
“As a subcommittee, we have taken every step necessary to ensure the investigation has been conducted in a safe, confidential, and fair manner.”
