As expected, the former Chief Medical Health Officer for Interior Health has now been officially relieved of his duties.
Interior Health has confirmed Doctor Albert de Villiers is “no longer an employee of I-H.”
This comes a day after he was convicted of sexual assault against a child.
Following his arrest, de Villiers was placed on general paid leave from Interior Health as his case worked its way through the courts. The health authority’s most recent financial statements show he was paid nearly $362,000 during the 2021-22 fiscal year.
It’s unclear at this point if de Villiers could receive any compensation from Interior Health due to his dismissal.
The Health Authority says only that it will not be able to “comment further” on that or other questions Radio NL has raised about de Villiers’ dismissal or compensation.
A date for sentencing has not yet been set, with the case back in court on Monday, Feb. 13.
Beyond this week’s conviction in Alberta, de Villiers is also set to go on trial in August on separate charges of voyeurism, making explicit material available to a child, and invitation to sexual touching.
These are related to incidents that allegedly took place between January of 2017 and December of 2019.
