Kamloops RCMP say a youth was arrested after threats were made against at Westsyde Secondary, prompting the school to be put in a brief hold and secure Tuesday afternoon.
While police did not name the school, they say they were called to a school on Bebek Road in Westsyde around 1:45 p.m., Feb. 14.
“Due to the quick action of the police officers responding, the suspect was located very quickly after police received the report and the hold and secure was lifted prior to the end of the school day,” Kamloops RCMP Superintendent, Jeff Pelley, said in a news release.
It is not clear what happened at Westsyde Secondary, but Vice Principal Cecile McVittie told parents in an email, a copy of which was forwarded to NL News, that the hold and secure began at 1:55 p.m. and that it was lifted 30 minutes later, at 2:25 p.m.
“There was an incident in the community that forced us into a Hold and Secure,” McVittie said. “During a Hold and Secure, all students are kept in the building, outside doors are locked, outside windows are closed and shutters are drawn, and we have normal movement throughout the building.”
“In these events, please do not attempt to come and pick up your child unless contacted by the office or SD73 representative. Our goal is to keep your students safe.”
RCMP say no further information will be released to protect the identity of the suspect and the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
If you have information related to this incident, they say to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-5270.
