For the very first time, the BC Wildlife Park’s annual Easter Egg hunt will feature a Sensory Friendly Day.
General Manager Glenn Grant says it will take place on April 10, between 9 a.m. and noon, in partnership with the Canucks Autism Network and TD Bank.
He tells NL News it is building off a similar event held during Wildlights last December.
“It was a huge turnout, so I think its gong to be fantastic,” Grant said. “We’ll be doing more of them throughout the year as we do events that gather people around where it gets a little hectic. We will consider making sure that we have a space for everyone.”
Grant says no music will be played during that three hour period on April 10, adding there will be a designated quiet space for people who need a break.
Canucks Autism Network staff will also be stationed across busier areas of the park, with sensory kits – complete with noise cancelling headphones and other supports – available for anyone who may need one.
“I don’t know if you’ve been out there at Easter, but when you throw all that chocolate in an Easter Egg hunt area, [there are] kids that are pushing each other, and it is loud,” Grant added
“We’ve got music going, we got Uncle Chris screaming at the kids, so it really can be intimidating for anybody with sensory issues.”
As for the four day event from April 7 to 10, Grant says in addition to regular easter egg hunts, there will be animal encounters and face painting at the Wildlife Park.
