BC’s Transportation Minister says a truck driver caught on video narrowly avoiding a head-on crash on the Yellowhead Highway, north of Kamloops, is facing possible criminal charges.
Rob Fleming says he anticipates charges are likely, after a video surfaced showing a semi driver passing a vehicle on a double-yellow line before forcing that vehicle onto the shoulder as he tried to avoid a head-on crash with an oncoming vehicle.
“I have seen that footage. That company and that driver are under police investigation right now,” Fleming said on the NL Noon Report. “We’ll leave them to establish what the offenses – multiple offenses – may be.”
“And whether there’s the laying of charges there. I expect there will be. But the main thing on [Highway 5 North] to keep it safe is enforcement.”
While the license plate of the truck has since been determined to be from Alberta, Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell says he’s been contacted by Ontario’s version of the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch, who are also said to be investigating.
This is about 30kms south of the triple fatal about a month ago.

The video, taken by the dash cam of a different trucker, is being held up as an example of the dangerous driving habits of truckers and other drivers along Highway 5 North. That stretch of highway is being used more frequently by inter-provincial drivers due to the construction on the Trans Canada through the Kicking Horse Canyon.
“I’ve talked to the mayors on that corridor and they’ve all said that CVSE and RCMP enforcement seems to be working and modifying behavior,” Fleming said. “I think we’ve got to keep that up, especially as construction projects do provide detours that may have an impact on the traffic volume.”
