UPDATE April 11, 12 noon – The Kamloops Cycling Coalition is launching a new program to map areas of the city where parking a bike can be done securely.
Coalition co-founder Deb Alore says the ultimate goal is to get more people to use bicycles as transportation, as the city continues to upgrade its cycling infrastructure.
“Every time I need to go somewhere, meet with somebody, go to a meeting, whatever I’m doing, I find myself stopping to think, ‘where am I putting my bike? Where am I going to put my bike where it’s going to be safe?'” Alore said.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, she says the coalition is working alongside the City’s transportation department to map out where bike racks and lockers are located.
“They’ve gone about the downtown location and they have mapped where city owned bike racks are located. And they’ve been looking at the gaps because it is something that they want to address.,” Alore said, noting once complete, there will be an online map – with photographs – showing cyclists where they’re able to securely lock up their property.
“You can decide that I want to go to such and such a place,” she added. “You know where you want to go, you can look at the map, and you’ll be able to click on that area and see where the nearest bike racks are. What they look like. What proximity to other businesses they are in.”
The project is all volunteer with Alore saying they don’t have a hard deadline when it might be completed.

More Bike Valet options coming
The KCC also says it has been working with the City of Kamloops’ Sustainability Division to provide more Bicycle Valet parking options at events this year.
They say that work has been underway following the “success of Canada Day, Ribfest, and BrewLoops last year” where people were able to leave their bikes with volunteers so they could enjoy the event.
They’re putting the call out for volunteers to help staff these valet stations, noting they will then reach out to volunteers to fill shifts as needed.
“This is a wonderful way to help us build a cycling culture in Kamloops,” the KCC said in its newsletter. “It also provides a much appreciated service to the community and is a great way to engage with fellow cyclists.”
