Residents in the Shuswap area have been advised to exercise caution as a rapid increase in temperature is expected to cause a surge in water runoff, potentially leading to flooding in smaller water systems like rivers, streams, and creeks.
Although cooler spring weather has delayed the snow melts, the upcoming weekend is predicted to bring a sharp rise in temperatures, which could accelerate the snow melting process at a fast pace.
“While this should not impact the level of local lakes significantly, smaller water systems including rivers, streams and creeks may rise rapidly,” said the CSRD in a statement.
In light of this development, the Shuswap Emergency Program has urged residents to take proactive steps to protect their homes. They are advised to monitor the water levels closely and watch out for signs of flooding or land slippage.
The public has also been cautioned to be vigilant around rising river and creek levels, to exercise caution around fast-flowing water, and to supervise children and pets at all times.
While the water levels in the lakes are not expected to be affected significantly, it is crucial to be prepared for any potential flooding.
The Shuswap Emergency Program has assured residents that they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
