Kamloops City Councillors will consider a development permit application for a new car wash at the site of the former Greyhound bus station at Tuesday’s meeting.
According to a city staff report, the numbered company that owns the site is looking to demolish all of the existing buildings and build a single-tunnel car wash on eastern side of the property, leaving the western side to be developed in the future.
“To maintain traffic mobility along Notre Dame Drive, the primary access to the development is from Laval Crescent with a secondary right-in-only access from Notre Dame Drive,” the report said. “These entrance points allow vehicles to access the car wash and future development site on the western side of the property.”
“After entering the site, vehicles using the car wash are directed to three queue lines before proceeding to the car wash and then pass by a vehicle vacuum station before exiting the site from a second access point along Laval Crescent.”
There will be pedestrian access for employees from Notre Dame Drive with City staff noting a new sidewalk will also be built along Laval Crescent as part of this development.
The former Greyhound shelter site has been home to the 50-bed Merit Place shelter since Feb. 2022.
Operated by the Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Housing announced a two-year extension of the lease – which was set to expire in June – with the shelter now set to stay open until March 2025.
“The proposed development permit and subsequent building permit will allow construction of a car wash on the property after the lease expires,” the City staff report said.
