High water on the South Thompson River has forced the City of Kamloops to close the Rivers Trail between Riverside Park and Pioneer Park
The section of trail under the CN Rail Bridge is often the first to close during spring freshet.
“Effective today, May 18, the portion of the Rivers Trail at the underpass between Riverside Park and Pioneer Park (under the CN Rail Bridge) is closed due to expected high water levels,” the City in a tweet.
As of 12:40 p.m. Thursday, the Thompson River west of the Overlanders Bridge was 6.642 metres high, according to real-time data from the federal government. That is up about a full metre since 5:30 a.m. last Saturday morning, May 13.
Its not clear when the Thompson rivers are expected to peak, though the City of Kamloops is not expecting major flooding this year, owing to the lower than normal snowpack. The North Thompson was at 82 per cent of normal while the South Thompson was at 90 per cent of normal, as of May 1.
Riverside Park is also not expected to flood owing to new flood protection measures that were in place as of last summer.
