An 18-year-from Chilliwack with a Novice motorcycle licence is facing numerous charges after he was caught going 209 km/h on the Coquihalla Highway near Merritt.
BC Highway Patrol says the motorcyclist was first seen doing 199 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone at the Juliet Bridge around 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. They say the bike matched the description of one that did not stop for police two days earlier, on May 12.
In a news release Wednesday, they say the bike was seen leaving the highway where it ended up at the intersection of Voght Street in Merritt. Mounties say the driver tried to perform a U-turn to get away, though he wiped out and was arrested by a police officer who was waiting.
“Motorcycle safety can not be over-stated. You aren’t inside the metal frame of a larger vehicle that could protect you in the event of a collision,” Cpl. J.R. Michaud of BC Highway Patrol in Kamloops said.
“Riding a motorcycle in this manner is shows a complete disregard for the safety of the public, and we’re glad that BC Highway Patrol was able to work together with Merritt RCMP to bring this incident to a safe conclusion with no injuries.”
Police say the motorcycle was impounded, while the rider was found to be carrying another fake driver’s licence.
His name was not released, but police say he has a court date next month.
