The City of Kamloops says there will be a series of closures at the Tournament Capital Centre this summer.
It will get underway with a three month closure at Hillside Stadium so crews can replace the current polyurethane track with a higher-grade Mondotrack at a cost of about $2.9 million. Work is set to get underway on June 12 with an expected completion date on Sept. 15.
This track replacement comes after new turf was installed at Hillside Stadium in the summer of 2020. The initial plan was replace both the turf and the track at the same time, though the City later deferred the track replacement due to uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The TCC Fieldhouse will also be closed close between Aug. 8 and Aug. 24 for annual maintenance, while the Canada Games Aquatic Centre will be closed from Aug. 12 to Sept. 4 for regularly scheduled upkeep.
“As Canada’s Tournament Capital, it’s critical we maintain and upgrade our facilities as best we can to continue to offer residents and athletes the very best facilities possible to use for training, competing, or everyday recreational opportunities,” Sean Smith, the City’s Business Operations and Events Supervisor, said.
While the fieldhouse is closed, Smith says the Sandman Centre concourse will be open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.
“Various other walking trails are also available as an alternative for residents looking to stay active during that time,” he said. “During the pool closure, residents are encouraged to utilize Brock Outdoor Pool or Westsyde Pool.”
The City says all affected memberships will automatically be extended for the duration of the closure.
People are being to head to the TCC front desk or call 250-828-3655 if they need more information regarding membership.
