Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for much of Kamloops, the North Thompson, and the Cariboo.
It says wildfire smoke is either causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility over the next 24 to 48 hours.
“Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations,” the bulletin said.
“People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke. Be sure to check on people in your care and those around you who may be more susceptible to smoke.”
As of publishing, the Kamloops Air Quality Index was at a five or moderate risk. On the international scale, Kamloops is currently rated at 136, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
