Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for mountain passes around Kamloops because of the possibility of wet snow and slippery conditions tonight through Tuesday.
The statement covers the entire Coquihalla, the Okanagan Connector, and Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton.
“A trough of low pressure is affecting southwestern B.C., resulting in precipitation and lowering snow levels,” Environment Canada said. “The snow level is expected to reach approximately 1400 metres this evening and persist until Tuesday morning.”
“Scattered flurries are expected over Pennask summit of the Okanagan Connector tonight, while a mix of wet flurries and rain showers may occur near Coquihalla Summit, Allison Pass, and Helmer Lake Summit.”
Environment Canada says precipitation will increase and become more steady on Monday and Tuesday.
“The Okanagan Connector is likely to experience wet snow, potentially leading to snow or slush accumulation of up to 5 cm on the road surface and up to 10 cm of snow on the shoulder,” the statement said.
“The other passes may also see a mix of wet snow and rain, resulting in slippery road surfaces.”
With winter tires not required on highways this time of year, drivers are being told to exercise caution and drive at reduced speeds when encountering these slippery road conditions.
