A look at Fortune Drive on June 19, 2023.
The City of Kamloops says the final stages of resurfacing and utility work on Fortune Drive is currently underway.
Capital Projects Manager, Matt Kachel, says traffic on Fortune Drive between Oak Road and Larch Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in each direction until the end of this month to allow crews to proceed with milling and paving work.
“We’re still pretty close to on track, like it should only be a couple more weeks of work, but obviously when we have days like today where we have rain, it makes it a bit difficult for us to get at least the paving work done,” Kachel said.
“They are still going to proceed with what they can for right now but looking into next week, if we have good weather, then they should have it paved up. There may be some back and curb cleanup to do here and there but the road should be open in about two weeks.”
Work on the $1.92 million project began in early March, with Kachel telling RadioNL the project is still on track for a mid-July completion.
“The difficult underground utility work is complete with the sewer main getting done,” he said. “Now the crews are going to transition over to the other side of the road to remove the asphalt and set it up to pave the whole section of road.”
Kachel is still recommending that drivers take alternate routes if possible, as he notes there will be delays and congestion while this paving work is underway.
“There will be a few little things to clean up here and there but there won’t be like concrete barriers set up,” Kachel said. “It might just be during a slower time that they set up a little zone to get a tie in done or something like that, but [the work is] pretty much done.”
“It would only be if there is any issue that they need to do any more traffic control but for the most part, right its now its just milling and paving.”
This project comes about one year after crews repaved the section of Fortune Drive between 8th Street and Oak Road.
