Kamloops Fire Rescue is reminding residents ahead of the Canada Day long weekend that the use of fireworks and campfires is illegal inside City Limits in Kamloops without a permit.
Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Cail stresses fireworks are dangerous if used improperly.
“Vegetation in our area is easily drought-stressed, dry, and primed to burn,” said Cail. “It is critical that residents understand the extreme risk of fire in our city during a time of the year when the weather is hot and our desert-like environment is susceptible. We know that one spark can have disastrous consequences.”
The firework show, put on by the City of Kamloops, is still set to still go ahead Saturday evening at dusk.
Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc says at this point, he sees no reason to rescind his order, as the permit approved was issued to a trained and certified professional pyrotechnics display company with a known safety record.
However, KFR says the issued permit will be revoked if there is a case of extreme fire weather or high winds at the time of the event.
