The District of Logan Lake is mourning the death of Councillor Chris Candy, a former first responder who was serving his first term in office.
In a statement, the District says Candy passed away on Tuesday, July 18, though a cause of death was not released.
“Councillor Candy was a pillar of our community who was a great colleague, friend, and role model in his field,” Mayor Robin Smith said. “He championed many important causes throughout his career and will be remembered as a community supporter and kind soul with a great sense of humor and a quick wit.”
“I have many fond memories of laughing with him as he recalled tales from his past and imparted wisdom on us for the future. He will be missed by all of us.”
Candy had been serving as the Emergency Program Coordinator for the District of Logan Lake for two years prior to his election last October, having also served as Deputy Emergency Program Coordinator from 2009 until 2022.
“He was very passionate about this role, he was involved in the flooding here in Logan Lake in 2017 and also the Tremont Creek Wildfire in 2021,” Logan Lake Fire Chief, Doug Wilson, said. “He stayed behind to help set up the E.O.C. including washing clothes for the firefighters and setting up the triage center here at the firehall for blisters and cuts, he also fed many of the pets that stayed behind.”
“During the flooding in Merritt and surrounding area in 2021, Chris set up the ESS team at the recreation center to help register and collect donation for those that where displaced. He was a mentor to me here at the firehall teaching me the ways through the Emergency Coordination role.”
Candy also worked for as a paramedic for 38 years, and was the assistant Logan Lake Search and Rescue search manager for five years. He also worked as a Corrections Officer and Safety Representative for six and a half years.
Flags at the Logan Lake District Office, which were lowered to half-staff to mourn the passing of former Councillor Claire Newman who was killed in a hit and run crash near Valemount, will remain lowered.
Last October, the district also mourned the death of Allan Smith, the longest-serving councillor in its history.
“The District of Logan Lake has suffered intangible losses over the past few weeks,” the statement added.
Heartbreaking news that #LoganLake councillor Chris Candy has also passed. He was a dedicated individual who made great contributions to the local community and province. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. #bcpoli https://t.co/vDMVYt5jNs
