With a heat warning in effect for the Kamloops area, the City has opened the concourse of the Sandman Centre as a cooling centre.
The City says the facility on Lorne Street will be open from noon until 8pm until the end of the heat wave.
Environment Canada is calling for daytime high of 36 C Thursday and 35 C Friday in Kamloops with an overnight low of 18 C.
While Saturday and Sunday are also expected to hot with highs of 33 C and 32 C respectively, those temperatures are is just under the heat-warning threshold for the Kamloops-area.
Its the second time this month that Sandman Centre has opened as a cooling centre, after an earlier heat wave between July 8 and 10.
Health and Wellness Supervisor Linda Stride told Radio NL that the facility wasn’t heavily used, owing in part to the last minute decision to open the facility.
“I think we only saw about a dozen people or so come through each day,” Stride said. “We typically have seen that in the past; the first time that we activate, we see the numbers are low as we try to get the word out to the citizens that we are open during these very hot days.”
