The Executive Director of the Kamloops Film Society says its too soon to say if the Twin Rivers Drive-In could find a permanent home beside the Tournament Capital Ranch in Rayleigh.
Speaking on NL Mornings, Dusan Magdolen was asked about that possibility as the drive-in theatre navigates its fourth season in a third location.
“We had more space that we had last year, and definitely more space than we had at McArthur Island, and yeah its a beautiful spot,” Magdolen said, of this year’s location at 5355 Yellowhead Highway.
“We just have to see how it goes.”
The first two iterations in 2020 and 2021 were at McArthur Island, while last year’s drive-in was set up on Tk’emlúps land on Shuswap Road for the 2022 season.
As for the future, Magdolen says they’re waiting to see what Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc has planned for the Rayleigh property.
“They don’t want to sort of over commit, if their plans change, and that sort of thing, but everyone I’m working with, the intention is to have us back there but nothing firmed up yet,” he said, on NL Mornings. “Tk’emlúps has some plans for that whole parcel of land, like we’re only probably on a tenth of the space that they have there but some versions of those plans include a drive-in as well.”
“We just have to see how it shakes out. They might not be moving on them yet by next year lets say, so hopefully we can be in the same spot.”
Launched in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, Magdolen says the Kamloops Film Society has endeavoured to bring the Twin Rivers Drive-In back each summer.
“As far as the location last year, the band just felt that this spot was better. There might be more potential for future years,” he said. “There hasn’t been any commitment to anything past this year but we’re hopeful and they’re hopeful, its just a matter of waiting.”
The 2023 season for the Twin Rivers Drive-In got underway on July 21. The Kamloops Film Society plans to screen movies every Friday and Saturday night until Sept. 23.
