Kamloops Search and Rescue was tasked with a rescue over the weekend.
KSAR Manager Alan Hobler says a group of four individuals from Kamloops decided to drive up to the waterfall at Struthers Creek Falls on Saturday afternoon.
However, during their hike up, one of the girls, in her early 20’s tumbled roughly 70-meters down an embankment, and was unable to get back up.
“One of her friends, also fell after her, not quite sure if she went to rescue her friend or if she actually fell when the other one fell,” said Hobler.
As such, he says the Kamloops SAR team set up a rope rescue to pull both of them out.
“We were called out to do a rescue and the embankment was steep enough that we had to do a rope system to get both of them out.”
He says both women were only wearing flip-flops and bathing suits, when they tumbled down the embankment.
“I’m assuming they were expecting to take a little dip, they didn’t understand how far it was, it was relatively close maybe 350 to 400 metres away, but it was definitely a strenuous hike into that location and kind of hazardous.”
Despite both being a little rattled, Hobler says the young women only suffered minor injuries.
“The one gal had extensive cuts and scrapes all over her body, but fortunately nothing more serious than that,” he said. “They lost their flip flopts in the process as well.”
Additionally, Hobler gives credit to the RCMP officer who gave his boots to one of the young ladies at the bottom of the embankment.
“When we showed up on scene, he (the RCMP officer) hiked out to meet us and he was wearing just socks, so he gave up his boots to the subject that had taken the fall and he had hiked out on some pretty treacherous terrain and some pretty sharp slopes in his socked feet so I am pretty impressed with him.”
The situation has prompted KSAR to remind people to always be prepared, “no matter how short an outing might be.”
