RCMP say a semi truck driver who was caught on dashcam video passing on a double solid line on Highway 5 north of Kamloops in late March was fired and is no longer in Canada.
BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Mike Moore says the unidentified driver was based in Edmonton at the time of the infraction.
Dashcam video showed the semi force the white sedan it was trying to pass on a double yellow onto the shoulder of the road so it could avoid a head-on crash with an oncoming vehicle.
“BC Highway Patrol learned that the driver responsible for this event was immediately discharged from the company upon them hearing of the incident,” Moore said, noting the company cooperated with the police investigation.
“Investigators located an address and requested the Edmonton Police Service serve a BC violation ticket behalf of BC Highway Patrol.”
Moore says when police in Edmonton went to give the driver his ticket, they found that he had left Canada as he was no longer working.
“BC Highway Patrol would like to thank the company for their cooperation and rapid condemnation of the actions of their driver who jeopardized other road users with his reckless and dangerous actions,” Moore added.
“Charges under the Motor Vehicle Act of British Columbia have a one-year statute of limitations. Should the driver return to B.C. within the one-year period, BC Highway Patrol would look to lay charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.”
In April, B.C.’s Transportation Minister, Rob Fleming, told Radio NL in April that he anticipated that charges were likely.
“And whether there’s the laying of charges there. I expect there will be. But the main thing on [Highway 5 North] to keep it safe is enforcement,” Fleming said.
