Valemount RCMP have released new surveillance pictures of a vehicle believed to be involved in last month’s crash that killed Merritt City Councillor, Claire Newman.
The crash happened sometime between 11:45 pm on Tuesday, July 4, and midnight on July 5 on Highway 16 near Lucerne Campground, just west of the B.C. – Alberta border.
In a news release, Valemount RCMP say a 2016 to 2018 model year Jeep Cherokee believed to be involved in the crash was seen driving east along Highway 16 at the Parks Canada gate, west of Jasper, Alberta, around midnight.
“Unfortunately, the license plate number is not visible and there is no front plate on the vehicle,” RCMP North District spokesperson, Cpl. Madonna Saunderson, said.
“Once the vehicle passed through the Parks Canada gate, it is unknown if the vehicle travelled south toward Banff or east toward Edmonton. Police checked video surveillance at gas stations in both Jasper and Hinton, Alberta, but the suspect vehicle was not seen on video.”
Saunderson says the vehicle involved in the crash will likely have damage to its front, noting it could include a missing driver’s side headlight and damage to the front grill from the impact.
People with information about this vehicle, or those who may have seen it on July 4 and July 5 are being told to contact the Valemount RCMP at (250) 566-4466 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
