Kamloops Mounties have confirmed the arrest of one person following a weekend demonstration at the “Drag Storytime” event at the North Kamloops Library as part of Pride Week celebrations.
RCMP say the person arrested went into the room where the reading was taking place.
“While police were on scene, a protestor entered the story-time room and began filming the event, which was intended and attended by children under 18 years old,” said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson.
“The protestor was asked to leave and refused to do so.”
That person was subsequently detained for trespassing and mischief, but there is no word if charges will be recommended.
Speaking during Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Councillor Katie Neustaeter’s said she was “disappointed” to see opposition to the event.
“It was heartbreaking to see that kind of response in our community and I know that that is not what this table believes in and that is not what a caring, healthy inclusive community looks like,” she said.
“So just that that this voice comes from this space that says that is not who we are and that is not how we show up.”
At the same time, the RCMP are also investigating reports of an assault involving a person with a sign, though they haven’t said whether that person was the victim or not.
