It looked good early.
The Kamloops Broncos scored on their very first possession against the Okanagan Sun at Hillside Stadium but it turned out to be the only bright spot in a lopsided 66-7 loss Saturday night.
It was the first game of the season at Hillside Stadium due to renovations which put the Broncos on the road for the first five games of the BCFC season.
The Broncos made numerous mistakes mainly on special teams. They failed to execute punts of five different occasions either because of a bad snap or the punt attempt was blocked by an eager Sun special teams unit.
“We just need stop making silly mistakes that put us in a tough spot,” Head Coach Braden VanKoughnett said post game.
The Sun scored 65 straight points largely due to strong play on special teams and by running the ball while on offense.
“The old phrase, if you’re shooting yourself in the foot I wouldn’t be walking,” VanKoughnett added.
Wide Receiver Kaleb Senz was a bright spot for the Broncos, scoring their only touchdown on six receptions. He also dazzled on a couple of kick returns.
Number one Broncos quarterback Clark Snider missed the game with a shoulder injury. Back-up Josh Chairson handled the duties before being replaced in the second half.
“We have to get back to basics. We can’t make the same mistakes over and over,” lamented VanKoughnett.
The loss pushes the Broncos to 0-6 on the season. Okanagan improves to 5-1.
It doesn’t get any easier for the home team next week. They host the BCFC’s top team in the 6-0 Westshore Rebels.
