World Champion hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg will be honoured at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops this afternoon.
Katzberg won gold in the hammer at the worlds in Budapest last month. His throw of 81.25 metres set Canadian record in the process.
“We’re really proud to have got him moved from Nanaimo here to Kamloops and to train with Dylan [Armstrong] and the Kamloops Track and Field Club,” Kamloops Track and Field Club President, Judy Armstrong, said.
“People have been very supportive. It’s very exciting and this young man has a very exciting future with the Olympics in Paris in 2024.”
Monday’s hour-long event in the upper meeting rooms of the TCC will get underway at 5 p.m. Armstrong says its open to the public.
“We’re going to show a quick video. We are going to hear from a couple of people like Carolynn Boomer, the manager of Pacific Sport,” Armstrong said.
“His coach, Dylan Armstrong, he’s going to chat about it, and then we’re going to hear from Ethan and open it up for some questions if anyone has any.”
The 21-year-old Katzberg has been knocking on the door of the world’s best in the last year. He’s improved his best throw by over 25 metres, going from 55.72 metres in 2019 to his current 81.25 metres.
“This is the first time a Canadian man has medaled in this event,” the Kamloops Track and Field Club, said in a statement following Katzberg’s win at the 2023 World Athletics Championships last month.
“Ethan, your home club and Kamloops could not be more proud.”
