The BC Wildfire Service will rescind a campfire ban across the Kamloops Fire Centre this week, citing decreased temperatures and higher relative humidity in the area.
The ban, which came into effect on July 7, will be lifted at noon on Thursday, Sept. 28.
“This rescind includes the use of Chimineas and Tiki and similar kinds of torches,” the BC Wildfire Service said, noting larger Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will continued to be prohibited until noon on Oct. 13, 2023.
The use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, as well as burn barrels or burn cages also remain off limits at this time.
“These prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Kamloops Fire Centre jurisdiction, unless specified otherwise in an enactment (e.g., in a local government bylaw),” the BC Wildfire Service said.
“Always check with local government authorities to see if any other burning restrictions are in effect.”
People who are found in violation of these restrictions may be issued a ticket for $1,150, while being required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000. If convicted in court, they could be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
