The President of the Kamloops Legion says this year’s Remembrance Day fly over will likely be the last one for a number of years.
Speaking on NL Mornings, Daniel Martin says this year’s fly over featuring four planes from the 419 Squadron will take place shortly after 11 a.m. on November 11.
“This will be last time this year that we’ll see our planes come on top of us,” Martin said.
“They will be stood down because of the new trainer and all this, so we don’t know how long that’s going to be again, but yeah, this year we were told that would be the last fly by for a while.”
The 419 Squadron uses the CT-155 Hawk jets for fly overs.
Reached for comment, Martin told Radio NL the planes are being stood down as the Royal Canadian Air Force is buying new fighter jets.
“Since they don’t know what fighter jets they’re going to get, they don’t know what training jets they’re going to buy, so they’re going to be stood down for a while,” Martin said, noting it could be as many as five to ten years before there is another fly over on Remembrance Day.
Radio NL has reached out to the Royal Canadian Air Force for comment and will update this story when more is known.
