Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc has announced plans for a grand opening ceremony for its new grocery store.
Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir says there will be a number of prizes, deals, free samples, and music at the grand opening ceremony, which will get underway at 11 a.m. on November 16.
“The launch of Sweláps Market marks a huge milestone, offering a highly anticipated amenity to all our neighbors and fulfilling a directive from our Tk’emlúps membership,” Casimir said, in a statement.
“In a highly visible, convenient location, Sweláps Market is positioned for success and will further grow and diversify our economic position.”
The long-awaited store at the intersection of the Yellowhead Highway and Shuswap Road intersection has been open for the past two weeks.
In announcing the project back in June 2021, Tk’emlúps said the 22,000 sq. foot grocery store will bring fresh food and groceries closer to home while also creating jobs and maximizing local development.
In addition to a full grocery selection, they say the store will feature an in-house butcher, a bakery and deli, as well as ready-to-eat meals. A loyalty program and online shopping will be launched in the near future.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to bring a wide range of high-quality products and exceptional customer service to this store and our shoppers,” General Manager, Kara Stokes, added. “We have the best customers and will continue to build on our products and services.”
“We can’t wait to welcome you, for an unforgettable shopping experience. With our doors now open we will continue to strive to become the place to work and shop!”
Tk’emlúps says a total of 65 people were hired to work at the grocery store, 15 more than the initial estimate of 50 during the first year of operations. The band has said there could be as many as 100 employees by the fifth year.
“With immense care for every detail, we have developed a welcoming, vibrant, and competitive business that celebrates our culture,” Casimir added.
