UPDATE: 9:45am
An earlier travel advisory for the Coquihalla Highway has now been lifted by DriveBC.
The province had been telling drivers to avoid the route due to freezing rain, which began hitting much of the Southern Interior.
The travel advisories for Highway 97 in the Cariboo, as well as on the TransCanada south of Cache Creek have also been lifted.
However, motorists are still being told to avoid travelling the Okanagan Connector due to continued freezing rain there.
Despite the storm, DriveBC did not register any crashes along the major routes through the overnight and this morning.
Original Story:
A travel advisory remains in-effect for the Kamloops to Merritt section of the Coquihalla this morning, as well as other major routes throughout the region.
DriveBC is recommending against taking the Coquihalla, as freezing rain and snow is set to continue along that stretch for the next few hours.
A similar advisory is in-place for Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon from Cache Creek to Spences Bridge, as well as Okanagan Connector, Highway 97 into the Cariboo and Hope-Princeton route along Highway 3.
No accidents have been reported from the freezing rain, which began hitting the region at around 10pm last night.
“A warm front associated with a low pressure system is moving into the B.C. interior. As warm air aloft moves over the existing cold air, freezing rain will develop, particularly over higher elevations and highway passes,” states Environment Canada in its Freezing Rain Warning. “Freezing rain will end or change to rain this morning as the cold air erodes. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays. Utility outages may occur.”
Thus far, no power outages are being reported.
DriveBC is reporting relatively clear driving conditions along the TransCanada through the Rockies, despite earlier predictions of 5 to 10-centimeters of snow through Rogers Pass.
Freezing rain is forecasted for #BCHwy5 and #Hwy97C starting at midnight this evening. Crews have applied anti-icing chemicals proactively and are ready to apply de-icing salt. Please be cautious of slippery conditions when travelling through the corridor @DriveBC pic.twitter.com/E2gTWI665Z
