The group behind the annual Camp Out to End Youth Homelessness in Kamloops has set a fundraising goal of $155,000 this year.
Tangie Genshorek, the Executive Director of A Way Home Kamloops, says they’re hoping this year’s camp-out – the seventh edition – will see an increased number of people and donors step up, regardless of whether they make their way to McDonald Park on December 8.
“Its a hybrid event, so through COVID we had to start doing it online,” Genshorek said. “We’re really happy to continue to do it as a hybrid event, both online and in-person, so that makes it really accessible. People can camp in different places.”
“I think the first year, they raised about $18,000 and last year, we raised $128,000. Our goal is to raise $155,000 this year.”
The money raised from the camp-out goes towards the soon-to-be-complete Katherine’s Place on Tranquille Road.
Genshorek told City Council that they’re on track to occupy the building by October next year.
“Construction is on scheduled for us to occupy the building in basically one year from now,” she said. “The camp out dollars are going to programming, which will be be operating hopefully in Katherine’s Place by the end of next year.”
