The B.C. Green Party have named Jonah Timms as their candidate in the Fraser-Nicola riding for the 2024 provincial election.
It will be second time that Timms will run for the Greens, following his third place finish in 2020, behind three-term incumbent Tegart and the NDP’s Aaron Sumexheltza, who is now the party president.
“I want to be an MLA because I believe that we can do so much more for our communities that are impacted by so many issues, including climate change and the cost of living crisis,” Timms said, in a statement. “We need our hospitals to be staffed, our environment to be safe to recreate in, and people to be able to afford homes where they live and work.”
“The issues that we face in our province are all connected, and it’s vital that everybody has a say in how we tackle them. I firmly believe that we can do so much more to protect the wellbeing of our communities and the future of our environment. I am excited to continue my work towards this as a B.C. Green MLA.”
Timms spent two years as a park interpreter for Parks Canada and has done invasive species removal for the New Zealand government. He now works for the B.C. Ministry of Forests as Senior First Nations Relations Advisor.
He also founded the Lillooet Community Volunteer Invasives Team to remove invasive plant species from trails in his local area and sits on the board of his local BC General Employees Union, representing his community of workers.
“Jonah has a wealth of experience in conservation advocacy and emergency response policy that will be invaluable to the party,” Party Leader Sonia Furstenau said, in a statement. “He has focused much of his career on ensuring all voices are heard in policy decisions.”
“Fraser-Nicola is a stunning area of British Columbia that really showcases everything we have to lose if we don’t act on climate change. Jonah is already a powerful advocate for his riding, prioritizing collaborative methods to push forward meaningful change.”
Timms and Tegart are the only two confirmed Fraser-Nicola candidates. The BC NDP and BC Conservatives have not yet publicly announced who the candidates will be.
The next provincial election in B.C. is scheduled to be held on or before October 19, 2024.
